Fantasy Baseball and Vegas Odds Handicapping: Who to Pick Up
Fantasy Baseball free agent pools can be an incredible mystery. In standard 5×5 mixed leagues the free agent pool is made up of players deemed not valuable enough to be on a roster. We’re all familiar with the ‘island of mis-fit toys’ theory that has swept through baseball over the last decade, this theory isn’t exactly the same in fantasy baseball, but there are valuable free agents out there. We’re going to take a look at who’s stock the fantasy baseball market says is rising. We’ll break down if these players are valuable or not. For relevancy’s sake, we’ll analyze the players who have been added the most frequently of late.
Mark Ellis, 2B, LAD: Aging second baseman are normally not great fantasy baseball additions. Ellis is 36 years old, easily falling into the ‘aging’ category. Through 20 games, he’s playing well over his ability. Ellis has never proved to be a valuable fantasy commodity. He doesn’t hit for a high average, doesn’t score or drive in a lot of runs, and doesn’t steal bases. If you struck while the iron was hot and picked up Ellis towards the beginning of the year, kudos to you. Now would be a good time to dump him because he’s going to steadily move towards reality. Which for Ellis is .266/.331/.395 and 6 HR, it’s time to get off the Mark Ellis wagon.
Russell Martin, C, PIT: Not many two-time All-Star catchers that hit 21 HR are free agents. Although Russell Martin falls into that category. Martin is coming off a year where his BA was .211, undoubtedly driving down his draft stock. The Canadian however, has proven to be a much better hitter through his career with a career BA of .260. Home runs are what make Martin a valuable pickup. Catcher is the toughest position to get offensive output out of, so unless you’ve got one of the premier catchers in the league, scoop up Martin.
Omar Infante, 2B, DET: If you read the breakdown of Mark Ellis above, there won’t be much different when it comes to Infante. He’s a little younger than Ellis which is good for his career but not for a fantasy owner. Infante is a light hitter who doesn’t provide much more than a decent average. Hitting .305 through 86 PA is a great accomplishment for Infante but he won’t keep it up. Stay away from Infante unless you’re desperate for a couple hits at the second base position.
Travis Hafner, DH, NYY: Designated Hitters are tough fantasy plays. Obviously, they lock up your roster moving ability by only being able to play the utility position. Nonetheless, if you’ve been playing Hafner for the month of April you’ve got to be loving life. Hafner has cranked 6 home runs and driven in 14 runs. Hafner has had some big years in the best but those days are far behind him. Playing in Yankee Stadium will help improve his home run numbers but he’s still not playing every single day and most will agree that his numbers are going to subside. Leave him for someone else to grab.
Marwin Gonzalez, SS, HOU: Gonzalez’s biggest accomplishment of this year will probably be breaking up Yu Darvish’s no hitter in early April. Even though his single between Darvish’s legs have gotten him the most ink, Gonzalez has been a solid offensive producer this year. He’s hitting .300, something he’s come close to doing in the minor leagues a couple times, so the potential is there. Gonzalez won’t provide value to power metrics but he is a serviceable shortstop especially if you need help with BA. He’s a good pickup if you’ve got a shortstop with a low BA and no potential.

Baseball Picks Game Preview: New York Mets at Colorado Rockies
After the New York Mets had seen two consecutive games get wiped out due to bad weather, the team is hoping to play two games today. The Mets, who had the first game of their four game set against the Colorado Rockies wiped out due to snow last night, are set for a day/night doubleheader today as Major League Baseball hopes to squeeze all four games of this series in around sloppy weather. First pitch for Game One at Coors Field is set for 3:10 pm, and the Mets will send righty Dillon Gee (0-2, 7.71 ERA) to the mound. Gee, who is looking to snap a two game losing streak, will face off with righty Juan Nicasio (1-0, 4.91 ERA) for the Rockies. Here is the lineup the Mets will send out for the first game.
- RF Jordany Valdespin
- 2B Daniel Murphy
- 3B David Wright
- 1B Ike Davis
- C John Buck
- LF Lucas Duda
- CF Kirk Nieuwenhuis
- SS Ruben Tejada
- SP Dillon Gee
Pre-Game Notes:
- Game time temperature will be around 46 degrees with a 36 degree wind chill.
- There was so much snow on the field last night that Colorado Rockies owner Dick Monfort grabbed a shovel and helped remove some snow.
- The Mets went 2-5 against the Rockies in 2012, but both of their victories were in Coors Field.
- John Buck gets a start in the day game of the double header, which is likely because manager Terry Collins expects it is the more likely of the two games to get played. Expect Anthony Recker to start in the night cap.
- Ike Davis will look to get on track in the hitter friendly confines of Coors Field. Davis is hitting only .128 with one home run and two RBI’s in 10 games.

Sports Betting Champ: 2013 Phillies Revealed
Let us examine the latest Phillies performance last night in Cinncinatti: The starting pitching was solid, the offense was mostly absent and the bullpen blew the game in the 8th inning, resulting in a loss. Sound like a familiar scenario? It should; that describes most of the 2012 season. Ugh.
Is this Déjà vu or Déjà voodoo? Has someone or something cast a sleepy spell over this team for the second consecutive year? It is like Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs in the bullpen passing the cursed apple around to the rest of the team. If the drowsy Phils are waiting for Prince Charming to deliver true love’s kiss and wake them up, they may be waiting for quite a long time…
Because if Chase Utley’s 2 run bomb to tie the game up in the 8th inning wasn’t enough to light a fire under this team, I cannot imagine what would be enough. Or how about Cliff Lee’s gutsy performance after a very weird 7th inning? He wound up only allowing 2 runs in 7 innings, which is a pretty good day.
And then there was the amazing, stupendous, brain-warping, Superman catch that Ben Revere made earlier in the game. Nearly everyone on the team starred in awe as Revere flew through the air backwards and nearly horizontal to snag this ball. He even had the presence of mind to throw the ball in to double up the runner, even after smashing face first into the ground after the catch.
Still, this team could not rally late in the game. They had only 5 hits total on the night. Both Jeremy Horst and Mike Adams struggled in the 8th, allowing 2 more runs to the Reds who had also had difficulty finding hits early in the game.
Worse, the Reds came into this game on a 5-game losing streak. The Phillies should have crushed them. Instead, they went down in flames, losing by a score of 4-2. Their offense has been on the Most Wanted list for 4 straight games now. No one seems to know where it went.
Meanwhile, the Braves still only have 1 loss (to the Phils, oddly enough) and the Fightins’ are lurking near the bottom of the NL East in 4th place. Ok, it is only April, I know…still, this team needs to WAKE UP!
Perhaps I am being a little rough on the team here. But it is easier to be angry about a silly baseball game than have to think about what a sad day it was yesterday. Although Monday was Jackie Robinson day, sadly, this was overshadowed by the tragedy in Boston earlier that day. So while I am in the mood to rant, can I just say, what is with these freaking psychopaths bombing innocent people?? I am outraged, as are the rest of the sane to mostly-sane people of the world.
My heart goes out to all the people affected by this senseless act of evil. I wish I had better words to convey my sympathies. But all I can think is sad, sad, sad… :O(

Baseball Betting: Boston Red Sox Place Joel Hanrahan On 15-Day Disabled List
MLB News: Tuesday the Boston Red Sox placed relief pitcher Joel Hanrahan on the 15-day disabled list due to a sore right hamstring. The move is retroactive to April 14.
Fantasy Ramifications: Hanrahan, who has pitched for the Washington Nationals, Pittsburgh Pirates and Boston Red Sox in his career had a terrific 2011 and 2012 season as the Pirates closer in which he totaled 76 saves while striking out more than one batter per inning, while keeping his earned run average below 3.00. Those are number that scream fantasy gem, yet with the hamstring injury hindering his effectiveness on the mound, he has had a very dissapointing first year in the American League.
Look for Andrew Bailey to continue to act as the Boston closer until Hanrahan is healthy enough to take that role. Bailey is an excellent short-term option for any fantasy team that is in need of a closer.
