Bet Like a Pro: Where Will Tim Tebow Wind Up?

After just one season as a member of the NFL’s New York Jets, third-year quarterback Tim Tebow was released by the club on April 29. The winner of the Heisman Trophy in 2007 joined the Jets from the Denver Broncos in 2012 after New York sent a pair of draft choices to Denver. The move didn’t surprise the player or fans though as it was expected to happen sooner rather than later after the Jets went 6-10 last season.

The Jets still have Mark Sanchez as their starting quarterback, but his future with the team could also be on the bubble. John Idzik, the general manager of the Jets, is trying to get his club back on track and the quarterback position appears to be his number one priority at this moment. The Jets chose quarterback Geno Smith from West Virginia in the NFL Draft with the 39th selection overall and then three days later said goodbye to Tebow.

With the selection of Smith, some insiders feel the Jets may also let Sanchez go if he doesn’t improve this season. However, the club has already announced that Sanchez will be a member of it at least throughout the pre season. It’s believed Sanchez will remain with the team since it would cost New York $8.25 million to release him. The Jets will head into the pre season schedule with Sanchez, Smith, Greg McElroy, Matt Simms, and David Garrard as their quarterbacks.

Tebow is now free to join another NFL club after spending most of last season watching from the sidelines. He never seemed to earn the confidence of head coach Rex Ryan last year even when Sanchez struggled. Tebow is seen by many as an NFL-caliber player and could end up with another team in the near future. The Montreal Alouettes of the CFL (Canadian Football League) are also reportedly interested in him.

David Caldwell, the general manager of Jacksonville, said even though it’s Tebow’s home town, he won’t end up there with the Jaguars. He could interest Marc Trestman, the new coach of the Chicago Bears, but Tebow would have to back up starter Jay Cutler. Trestman has worked with Tebow before at the Senior Bowl as well as before the 2010 draft and said he’s very impressed with Tebow’s abilities and work ethic.

The San Diego Chargers could be another possibility as quarterback Philip Rivers struggled last season, but new head coach Mike McCoy will likely go with him against next season. McCoy worked with Tebow in Denver though and knows how good he can be when he’s on his game. Tebow led Denver to the playoffs in 2011 and McCoy hasn’t forgotten that. It’s possible that San Diego would take a chance on Tebow as he could seriously challenge Rivers for the starting job.

Since Tebow hails from Florida it’s possible that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers could be interested in him. He’s attract a lot of fans there even if he’s used as starting quarterback Josh Freeman’s backup. Tampa Bay currently has Adam Weber and Dan Orlovsky as backups along with Mike Glennon, a third-round draft choice. Tebow shouldn’t have a problem reaching number two on the team’s depth chart.

A long shot would be to join the New England Patriots to back up starter Tom Brady. It’s possible that he could play on special teams as well as a fullback/tight end. Another long shot could be ending up in the CFL with the Alouettes as they hold Tebow’s negotiating rights in the Canadian league. Wherever Tebow ends up, he’s surely going to attract a lot of attention.

Baseball Picks Game Preview: New York Mets at Colorado Rockies

After the New York Mets had seen two consecutive games get wiped out due to bad weather, the team is hoping to play two games today. The Mets, who had the first game of their four game set against the Colorado Rockies wiped out due to snow last night, are set for a day/night doubleheader today as Major League Baseball hopes to squeeze all four games of this series in around sloppy weather. First pitch for Game One at Coors Field is set for 3:10 pm, and the Mets will send righty Dillon Gee (0-2, 7.71 ERA) to the mound. Gee, who is looking to snap a two game losing streak, will face off with righty Juan Nicasio (1-0, 4.91 ERA) for the Rockies. Here is the lineup the Mets will send out for the first game.

  1. RF Jordany Valdespin
  2. 2B Daniel Murphy
  3. 3B David Wright
  4. 1B Ike Davis
  5. C John Buck
  6. LF Lucas Duda
  7. CF Kirk Nieuwenhuis
  8. SS Ruben Tejada
  9. SP Dillon Gee

Pre-Game Notes:

  • Game time temperature will be around 46 degrees with a 36 degree wind chill.
  • There was so much snow on the field last night that Colorado Rockies owner Dick Monfort grabbed a shovel and helped remove some snow.
  • The Mets went 2-5 against the Rockies in 2012, but both of their victories were in Coors Field.
  • John Buck gets a start in the day game of the double header, which is likely because manager Terry Collins expects it is the more likely of the two games to get played. Expect Anthony Recker to start in the night cap.
  • Ike Davis will look to get on track in the hitter friendly confines of Coors Field. Davis is hitting only .128 with one home run and two RBI’s in 10 games.

Sports Betting Champ: 2013 Phillies Revealed

Let us examine the latest Phillies performance last night in Cinncinatti: The starting pitching was solid, the offense was mostly absent and the bullpen blew the game in the 8th inning, resulting in a loss. Sound like a familiar scenario? It should; that describes most of the 2012 season. Ugh.

Is this Déjà vu or Déjà voodoo? Has someone or something cast a sleepy spell over this team for the second consecutive year? It is like Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs in the bullpen passing the cursed apple around to the rest of the team. If the drowsy Phils are waiting for Prince Charming to deliver true love’s kiss and wake them up, they may be waiting for quite a long time…

Because if Chase Utley’s 2 run bomb to tie the game up in the 8th inning wasn’t enough to light a fire under this team, I cannot imagine what would be enough. Or how about Cliff Lee’s gutsy performance after a very weird 7th inning? He wound up only allowing 2 runs in 7 innings, which is a pretty good day.

And then there was the amazing, stupendous, brain-warping, Superman catch that Ben Revere made earlier in the game. Nearly everyone on the team starred in awe as Revere flew through the air backwards and nearly horizontal to snag this ball. He even had the presence of mind to throw the ball in to double up the runner, even after smashing face first into the ground after the catch.

Still, this team could not rally late in the game. They had only 5 hits total on the night. Both Jeremy Horst and Mike Adams struggled in the 8th, allowing 2 more runs to the Reds who had also had difficulty finding hits early in the game.

Worse, the Reds came into this game on a 5-game losing streak. The Phillies should have crushed them. Instead, they went down in flames, losing by a score of 4-2. Their offense has been on the Most Wanted list for 4 straight games now. No one seems to know where it went.

Meanwhile, the Braves still only have 1 loss (to the Phils, oddly enough) and the Fightins’ are lurking near the bottom of the NL East in 4th place. Ok, it is only April, I know…still, this team needs to WAKE UP!

Perhaps I am being a little rough on the team here. But it is easier to be angry about a silly baseball game than have to think about what a sad day it was yesterday. Although Monday was Jackie Robinson day, sadly, this was overshadowed by the tragedy in Boston earlier that day. So while I am in the mood to rant, can I just say, what is with these freaking psychopaths bombing innocent people?? I am outraged, as are the rest of the sane to mostly-sane people of the world.

My heart goes out to all the people affected by this senseless act of evil. I wish I had better words to convey my sympathies. But all I can think is sad, sad, sad… :O(

Baseball Odds: Daily Notes for Tuesday, April 16th

Pedro Alvarez is poised for a BIG day against his historical punching bag, Jake Westbrook

Just like last year, I’ll be combing over box scores and scouring local beat writers’ reports each morning to help ensure  you have all the information you need in order to make the right decisions for your fantasy baseball lineup. So make sure you check back at this very spot for Hot/Cold Streaks, Injury News, Closer Updates, Daily Stats, and more so that you can stay one step ahead of the rest of your league!

5 Good Nights, 5 Bad Nights

It’s a fact of life that every baseball player goes through hot and cold streaks. It’s important not to let those streaks influence a player’s fantasy baseball value too much, but it is important to be aware of how a player is doing within a short period of time (a seven-day sorter is always a good tool to use). A player’s short-term numbers can be the difference between winning and losing in daily games, and it can also make a huge difference in year-long leagues. For instance, if you can keep finding the second basemen on hot streaks and dropping them for another streaking second basemen once they get cold, you can piece together a very useful middle infielder-by-committee for your roto team. So before we get to today’s games, let’s take a spin through last night’s box scores to identify who had a good night and who had a bad night on Monday, April 15th.

5 Good Nights

  • Joe Mauer: 4-5, 2 R, HR, 3 RBI
  • Ryan Zimmerman: 2-5, 2 R, HR, 4 RBI
  • Jed Lowrie: 2-4, R, 4 RBI
  • Ryan Dempster: 7.0 IP, 2 H, ER, 2 BB, 10 Ks
  • Bronson Arroyo: 8.0 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 3 K’s, W

Honorable Mention: Brandon Moss, Allen Craig, Tyler Moore, Nate Freiman, Jon Jay, Cliff Lee, Jordan Zimmerman, Kevin Correia, Jeremy Hellickson, Tommy Milone, Mark Buehrle, Paul Clemens

5 Bad Nights

  • Erik Bedard: 0.1 IP, 2 H, 6 ER, 4 BB, K
  • James McDonald: 1.2 IP, 8 H, 3 ER, 2 BB
  • Gavin Floyd: 4.1 IP, 9 H, 4 ER, 3 BB, 6 Ks
  • Josh Hamilton: 0-4, 2 Ks
  • Jimmy Rollins: 0-4, K

Dishonorable Mention: Joe Blanton, John Maine, Lance Lynn

Daily Grab Bag

Check back here for daily updates on injuries, closer battles, player news, and anything else that might affect your fantasy baseball team.

  • As the closer carousel continues to spin in St. Louis, Edward Mujica looks poised to get the next save opportunity and is definitely worth grabbing if you’re chasing saves.
  • Chase Headley (thumb) has progressed well enough in his rehab to the point where he may be activated by the Padres as soon as today.
  • Brett Lawrie (ribs) has been activated by the Blue Jays and will be in Toronto’s lineup when they take on the White Sox tonight.

3 Up, 3 Down, and Throwing Darts

Starting and sitting the right pitchers on a day-to-day basis is often the linchpin of winning any fantasy baseball league – roto, head-to-head, daily, and otherwise. In order to give you some help picking your pitchers for today, I’ve gone through all of the stats that I could (pitchers’ career numbers vs. certain hitters and lineups, home/road splits, lefty/righty splits, etc) and have made nine recommendations. I’m not going to proclaim that I’ll get these 100% correct all season, but anyone that does should be sitting on an island that they own in the Pacific – not writing fantasy baseball articles. The goal here is to play the odds the entire season and slowly build your “win” percentage closer to 100% than to 50%.

Here are today’s recommendations with, 3 Up (three pitchers you shouldn’t think of sitting), 3 Down (three pitchers with some warning flags for today), and Throwing Darts (three pitchers that I’ll be taking a flier on):

3 Up

Kris Medlen vs. Kansas City Royals

Doug Fister at Seattle Mariners

Derek Holland at Chicago Cubs

3 Down

Ubaldo Jimenez vs. Boston Red Sox

Brandon McCarthy at New York Yankees

Dillon Gee at Colorado Rockies

Throwing Darts

A.J. Griffin vs. Houston Astros

Jake Westbrook at Pittsburgh Pirates

Chris Capuano vs. San Diego Padres

Swings and Misses

A hitter’s career numbers against a pitcher don’t always tell the whole story, but it can be informative if used correctly. I’m of the opinion that some information is better than none, and while there are other pieces to the puzzle of setting your daily lineup (splits, weather, etc.), I think a hitter’s career numbers against a pitcher can be very indicative of future success or failure. Some guys just own certain pitchers, and vice versa. As such, I’ve gone through today’s matchups and picked the best (and worst) matchups I could find. Anything less than 10-12 career at-bats is a relatively small sample-size (so take those with a grain of salt), but sometimes that’s all that is available.

Swings

  • Pedro Alvarez is 11-for-19 (.579) with two home runs and eight RBI in his career against today’s starter, Jake Westbrook.
  • David Wright is 6-for-14 (.462) with three home runs in his career against today’s starter, Jeff Francis.
  • Ryan Braun is 5-for-14 (.357) with three home runs and six RBI in his career against today’s starter, Barry Zito.

Misses
  • Kevin Youkilis is 1-for-14 (.071) against today’s starter, Brandon McCarthy.
  • Josh Willingham is 2-for-19 (.105) in his career against today’s starter, Jason Vargas.
  • Adam Dunn is 4-for-24 (.167) in his career against today’s starter, Josh Johnson.

Baseball Betting: Boston Red Sox Place Joel Hanrahan On 15-Day Disabled List

MLB News: Tuesday the Boston Red Sox placed relief pitcher Joel Hanrahan on the 15-day disabled list due to a sore right hamstring. The move is retroactive to April 14.

Fantasy Ramifications: Hanrahan, who has pitched for the Washington Nationals, Pittsburgh Pirates and Boston Red Sox in his career had a terrific 2011 and 2012 season as the Pirates closer in which he totaled 76 saves while striking out more than one batter per inning, while keeping his earned run average below 3.00. Those are number that scream fantasy gem, yet with the hamstring injury hindering his effectiveness on the mound, he has had a very dissapointing first year in the American League.

Look for Andrew Bailey to continue to act as the Boston closer until Hanrahan is healthy enough to take that role. Bailey is an excellent short-term option for any fantasy team that is in need of a closer.
