New Cleveland Browns head coach Rob Chudzinski will go to war in 2013 with Brandon Weeden as his starting quarterback. This season will be an audition to see if Weeden is the team’s franchise quarterback of the future.

Weeden has a rocket arm and he threw for 3,385 yards, a Browns rookie record, in 2012. However, Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III spoiled everyone last year on how far a rookie quarterback can take his team.

The most important number relating to Brandon Weeden is 30: the number of candles on his birthday cake on Oct. 14.

Remember, this coaching regime didn’t draft Weeden, so if the Oklahoma State product doesn’t show the potential to take the team deep into the playoffs, the search for his eventual successor will begin next season.

Weeden’s backup, Jason Campbell, signed a two-year contract after spending the previous eight years with the Redskins, Raiders and Bears. Campbell, 31, is more experienced than most backups, but if he plays a lot this year, it means something has gone wrong with Weeden.

Brian Hoyer is coming home to Cleveland as the No. 3 Browns quarterback, also signing a two-year deal in the offseason.

The St. Ignatius High School graduate backed up Tom Brady from 2009-11 in New England before spending last season with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Arizona Cardinals for brief stretches.

The Browns are deep and experienced at quarterback, but the only question that matters is: Does Brandon Weeden have what it takes to eventually lead the Browns to the playoffs?
