Notre Dame, fresh off their week one victory over Navy in Dublin, makes its home debut this Saturday against long time in-state rival Purdue. Notre Dame heads into the game with backup quarterback Tommy Rees and inside linebacker Carlo Calabrese available for the first time this season, fresh off their one game suspensions. Purdue’s starting quarterback Caleb TerBush will be making his first start of the season against the Irish. Notre Dame leads the series with a record of 55-26-2. The game will be broadcast at 3:30pm EST on NBC.
Purdue are one of the great spread success stories over the 20 year history of the modern spread offense. Former head coach Joe Tiller and former offensive coordinator Jim Chaney devised a pass-heavy scheme that made future NFL quarterbacks Drew Brees, Kyle Orton and Curtis Painter stars at the college level, while giving a head ache for the Big 10. Purdue was on the vanguard of an offensive revolution that has completely changed football from the NFL on down to high school. The increased emphasis on five defensive back defenses, like the one Notre Dame used last week against Navy, is directly tied to the spread offense.
