mso-bidi-font-family: Verdana;\">OffshoreInsiders.com<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>With the 2012 NHL Winter Classic tomorrow, I felt it appropriate to sit down and assert my thoughts on the event. \u00a0The NHL&#8217;s fifth annual outdoor regular season game will feature two long-time Atlantic Division rivals as the <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/espn.go.com\/nhl\/team\/_\/name\/nyr\/new-york-rangers\" target=\"_blank\">New York Rangers<\/a> (23-9-4) head to <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Citizens_Bank_Park\" target=\"_blank\">Citizens Bank Park<\/a> in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to face-off against the <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/espn.go.com\/nhl\/team\/_\/name\/phi\/philadelphia-flyers\" target=\"_blank\">Philadelphia Flyers<\/a> (22-10-4). \u00a0The original plan was to throw the party at <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lincoln_Financial_Field\" target=\"_blank\">Lincoln Financial Field<\/a>, home of the <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/espn.go.com\/nfl\/team\/_\/name\/phi\/philadelphia-eagles\" target=\"_blank\">Philadelphia Eagles<\/a>, but the Eagles are scheduled for a home game New Year&#8217;s Day. \u00a0That scheduling conflict hampered the one-week preparation time needed to construct an outdoor ice-rink. \u00a0This is set up to be a brilliant matchup as two points in the standings only separate the two clubs.<\/p>\n<table class=\"tr-caption-container\" style=\"text-align: center;\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\" align=\"center\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-f0ZZm83B6zE\/Tv4-7uD9e4I\/AAAAAAAAAGY\/N5ZhxvaVp6s\/s1600\/2008+Winter+Classic+Citizens+Bank+Park.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-f0ZZm83B6zE\/Tv4-7uD9e4I\/AAAAAAAAAGY\/N5ZhxvaVp6s\/s640\/2008+Winter+Classic+Citizens+Bank+Park.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"392\" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td class=\"tr-caption\" style=\"text-align: center;\">The current setup for the 2012 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.<br \/>\n(NHL.com)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>All week, MSG has been airing the previous four Winter Classic&#8217;s to hype up this year&#8217;s event as a repeating series called &#8220;Countdown to the Winter Classic.&#8221; \u00a0A few nights ago I sat down and watched the full 2008 classic; the first time I&#8217;ve actually watched the entire broadcast since attending the game. \u00a0Looking back on the excitement level in the city of Buffalo as it hosted the first of many classic games, I took some interest into when we could possibly see the Winter Classic return to Buffalo. \u00a0With that, I wanted to look at each location it could possibly take place at in the future.<\/p>\n<p>The 2013 NHL Winter Classic will take place on\u00a0Tuesday, January 1st, 2013. \u00a0Assuming the NHL will keep the trend of awarding a new host city every year, along with also awarding a cold-weather city capable of outdoor hockey on New Year&#8217;s Day (sorry Miami&#8230; 76 and sunny doesn&#8217;t cut it), here is the list of the 16 NHL teams that remain:<\/p>\n<table cellspacing=\"40\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<em>Calgary<\/em><br \/>\nColorado<br \/>\nColumbus<br \/>\nDetroit*<br \/>\n<em>Edmonton<\/em><br \/>\nMinnesota<br \/>\n<em>Montreal<\/em><br \/>\nNew Jersey<\/td>\n<td>\nNY Islanders<br \/>\nNY Rangers*<br \/>\n<em>Ottawa<\/em><br \/>\nSt. Louis<br \/>\n<em>Toronto<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Vancouver<\/em><br \/>\nWashington*<br \/>\n<em>Winnipeg<\/em><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>For the sake of this post and how absolutely magnificent the &#8220;snow-globe effect&#8221; was in Buffalo\u00a0during the 2008 Winter Classic&#8230; paired with <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/cdn.bleacherreport.net\/images_root\/images\/photos\/001\/506\/419\/78689718_crop_650x440.jpg?1325166454\" target=\"_blank\">Ryan Miller&#8217;s toque<\/a>, warmer weather cities are out (<span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">Miami<\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">Tampa Bay<\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">Dallas<\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">Phoenix<\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">San Jose<\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">Anaheim<\/span>,\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">Los Angeles<\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">Nashville<\/span> and <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">Carolina<\/span>). \u00a0Chilly weather and a trace amount of snowflakes are of the essence in my eyes. \u00a0An asterisk denotes a team that has taken part in a past Winter Classic as the visiting team. \u00a0Whether or not that hurts their chances of hosting a classic in the future before any other team is unknown. \u00a0After tomorrow, both Philadelphia and Pittsburgh will have played as the host club and the visiting club. \u00a0I placed the Canadian teams in <em>italics<\/em> because\u00a0the Winter Classic has so far only featured US-based teams, while the Heritage Classic involves Canada-based teams.<\/p>\n<p>NHL Chief Operating Officer John Collins addressed the media yesterday after the Winter Classic Alumni Game on other topics regarding the future of the Winter Classic.\u00a0 Most importantly, he said the NHL isn\u2019t likely to stretch much beyond the Midwest for future Winter Classics because it likes the 1 p.m. EST window on January 1 or 2. \u00a0\u00a0\u201cWe have a window at 1 o\u2019clock on New Year\u2019s Day, so that limits your ability to go west,\u201d he said. \u00a0\u201cWe like that window, and we like the family environment at these games. I think part of that is playing at 1 o\u2019clock.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\"><\/div>\n<p>Without further\u00a0adieu, let&#8217;s talk hypothetical venues in no particular order. \u00a0Below you&#8217;ll notice the venue name, location, maximum seating capacity for ice-hockey and the locations average outdoor temperature on January 2nd.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Michigan Stadium<\/span><\/strong> &#8211; Ann Arbor, MI &#8211;\u00a0(cap. 109,901 &#8211; avg. temp. 25\u00b0)<br \/>\nHost: <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/espn.go.com\/nhl\/team\/_\/name\/det\/detroit-red-wings\" target=\"_blank\">Detroit Red Wings<\/a><br \/>\nI wanted to start here because not only is this the largest stadium in the United States in terms of capacity (nicknamed &#8220;The Big House&#8221; for a reason), it has a rich history and minor speculation already exists that this will be home ice for the 2013 Winter Classic. \u00a0If these rumors turn out to be true and the game is indeed awarded to Ann Arbor,\u00a0it could break the NHL&#8217;s all-time single-game attendance record due to the tremendous number of seats in this venue. \u00a0Last December,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Big_Chill_at_the_Big_House\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;The Big Chill at the Big House&#8221;<\/a> took place here as 104,173 people saw the Michigan Wolverines take on their long-time rival in the Michigan State Spartans. \u00a0This game was a rematch of the <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cold_War_(ice_hockey)\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Cold War&#8221;<\/a> game in 2001, which set a precedent for outdoor ice-hockey in the United States. \u00a0A Winter Classic in Ann Arbor would surely be a great sight.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Target Field<\/span><\/strong> &#8211; Minneapolis, MN &#8211; (cap. 39,504 &#8211; avg. temp.\u00a016\u00b0)<br \/>\nHost: <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/espn.go.com\/nhl\/team\/_\/name\/min\/minnesota-wild\" target=\"_blank\">Minnesota Wild<\/a><br \/>\nTarget Field, home of baseball&#8217;s <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/espn.go.com\/mlb\/team\/_\/name\/min\/minnesota-twins\" target=\"_blank\">Minnesota Twins<\/a>, welcomed it&#8217;s staff on January 4th, 2010 with a final construction cost of $545 million. \u00a0An outdoor hockey game on January 1st, 2013 would be a sensational way to celebrate the third birthday of this fresh, new, state-of-the-art baseball stadium. \u00a0Fans in attendance might be a little on the cold side with an average temperature of\u00a016\u00b0, but heated viewing areas can hopefully provide relief. \u00a0The popular left-field Budweiser roof deck features mostly standing room and the only bonfire in the majors.\u00a0 In 2010, ESPN The Magazine ranked this venue as the #1 stadium experience in North America, beating out 121 others. \u00a0The surging Wild this year along with the astonishing ice-hockey fan-base in Minnesota make this an ideal site for a future Winter Classic.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Yankee Stadium<\/span><\/strong> &#8211; Bronx, NY &#8211; (cap. 54,251 &#8211; avg. temp. 34\u00b0)<br \/>\nHost: New York Rangers<br \/>\nYankee Stadium is freshly constructed much like Target Field but at almost triple the cost coming in with a controversial final price tag of $1.54 billion opening in April 2009. \u00a0Although this venue is rich with baseball history and some may argue that ice-hockey has no business being played on the historical field, I say why not? \u00a0They have already played football, held boxing matches, NYU graduation ceremonies and prayer services within the walls of the stadium. \u00a0The only argument I see against the venue hosting a Winter Classic is that it may shockingly be too small since it is indeed located near the most populated city in the country and will sell tickets quickly. \u00a0MetLife Stadium, home of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bet365sportsbookonline.com\/football\">NFL<\/a>&#8216;s <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/espn.go.com\/nfl\/team\/_\/name\/nyj\/new-york-jets\" target=\"_blank\">New York Jets<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/espn.go.com\/nfl\/team\/_\/name\/nyg\/new-york-giants\" target=\"_blank\">New York Giants<\/a> might be a better option boasting a seating capacity of 82,566. \u00a0Will we see a Classic in the Bronx sometime soon? \u00a0The <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/espn.go.com\/mlb\/team\/_\/name\/nyy\/new-york-yankees\" target=\"_blank\">New York Yankees<\/a> were in discussions with the NHL to host the 2011 NHL Winter Classic but the NHL chose Heinz Field as the host. \u00a0The stadium was a candidate to host the 2010 NHL Winter Classic as well before it was awarded to Boston&#8217;s Fenway Park. \u00a0Imagine a Rangers\/Islanders Winter Classic at Yankee Stadium&#8230; we would have to call it something along the lines of a &#8220;Subway Series.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Citi Field<\/strong><\/span> &#8211; Flushing, NY &#8211; (cap. 45,000 &#8211; avg. temp. 34\u00b0)<br \/>\nHost: <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/espn.go.com\/nhl\/team\/_\/name\/nyi\/new-york-islanders\" target=\"_blank\">New York Islanders<\/a><br \/>\nLooking at the other end of New York&#8217;s subway system, a ride on the 7 Train will get you to Citi Field, home of baseball&#8217;s <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/espn.go.com\/mlb\/team\/_\/name\/nym\/new-york-mets\" target=\"_blank\">New York Mets<\/a>. \u00a0I&#8217;m building a streak here, as this stadium is also new, opening for business in 2009 with a final construction cost of $922 million. \u00a0Citi Field hosted a soccer game on June 7, 2011 between the national teams of Ecuador and Greece. \u00a0The extreme success of the game has led the Mets to consider having Citi Field host future soccer games as well as the Winter Classic. \u00a0Citi Field has somewhat of an edge over Yankee Stadium according to John Collins. \u00a0\u201cThere are a lot of really great venues in the New York area,\u201d Collins said. \u00a0\u201cYankee Stadium is obviously a special place, but we can\u2019t get in there for the next couple of years\u201d because of college bowl game commitments. \u00a0The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bet365sportsbookonline.com\/baseball\">Yankees<\/a> have hosted the Pinstripe Bowl on December 30 the past two years. \u00a0So Citi Field could see one of the next few Classics and I&#8217;m assuming the Islanders would play host as their home is only a mere half-hour drive down the parkway. \u00a0Who wouldn&#8217;t want to be in the Big Apple for New Years&#8217; biggest party anyways? \u00a0We could be seeing\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/f\/fa\/Citi_Field_Home_Run_Apple.JPG\" target=\"_blank\">Goal Apples<\/a> as soon as 2013 people. \u00a0Get ready.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>FedEx Field<\/strong><\/span> &#8211; Landover, MD &#8211; (cap. 82,000 &#8211; avg. temp. 35\u00b0)<br \/>\nHost: <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/espn.go.com\/nhl\/team\/_\/name\/wsh\/washington-capitals\" target=\"_blank\">Washington Capitals<\/a><br \/>\nThe second-largest stadium in the NFL by capacity, our countries capital a half-hour away, and the thought of Alexander Ovechkin&#8217;s antics outdoors make this venue more than ideal to host a Winter Classic in the future. \u00a0If the 30-year waiting list for <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/espn.go.com\/nfl\/team\/_\/name\/wsh\/washington-redskins\" target=\"_blank\">Washington Redskins<\/a> season tickets is any sign at all of avid sports fans in Washington, selling the place out wouldn&#8217;t be a problem. \u00a0Who would be the guest? \u00a0Pittsburgh, New York or maybe even Detroit? \u00a0I honestly wouldn&#8217;t mind seeing our Sabres down there in another football stadium Classic.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Busch Stadium<\/strong><\/span> &#8211; St. Louis, MO &#8211; (cap. 46,861 &#8211; avg. temp. 32\u00b0)<br \/>\nHost: <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/espn.go.com\/nhl\/team\/_\/name\/stl\/st-louis-blues\" target=\"_blank\">St. Louis Blues<\/a><br \/>\nCall it the &#8220;New Busch Stadium&#8221; or &#8220;Busch Stadium III&#8221;, whatever have you&#8230; but the home of baseball&#8217;s <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/espn.go.com\/mlb\/team\/_\/name\/stl\/st-louis-cardinals\" target=\"_blank\">St. Louis Cardinals<\/a> would be a wonderful place for the Blues to drop the puck with the panoramic view of the\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/6\/6d\/Homeplate.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Gateway Arch<\/a> and downtown skyline in the background. \u00a0The Midwest location would allow for a west coast team to jump in the mix barring any objections the NHL has with a noon EST start. \u00a0The many amenities of this modern ballpark would provide a positive feel and atmosphere. \u00a0Fantastic food and beer as well around every corner. \u00a0But how would beer sales work at Busch Stadium when Molson Canadian is the official beer of the NHL?
